Privacy Policy
Effective Date: 01/01/2025
Last Updated: 07/05/2026
Welcome to LearnNewWord! This Privacy Policy explains in detail how we collect, use, process, store, and share your information when you use the LearnNewWord Chrome Extension and the web application at app.learnnewword.com. By using our services, you agree to the terms described here.
1. Information We Collect
1.1 Account & Authentication Data
When you sign in using Google OAuth, we receive the following data from Google:
- Email address — used to identify and authenticate your account.
- Profile information (display name, profile picture) — used to personalize your experience.
We do not receive or store your Google password.
1.2 Vocabulary & Learning Data
We collect data you actively create while using the extension:
- Words you save — words added to your personal vocabulary list.
- Word collections — groups of words you organize for study.
- Study progress and quiz results — to track your learning history.
- Preferred study language and interface settings — stored as user preferences.
1.3 Page Content (Contextual Reading)
When you activate the extension on a webpage, the extension may read selected text or visible text from that page in order to:
- Look up word definitions.
- Identify the grammatical role of a word within a sentence (part-of-speech analysis).
- Generate AI-powered contextual explanations.
The content of the web page itself is not stored on our servers beyond the immediate request needed to fulfill the feature.
1.4 Usage Data
We may collect anonymized usage information such as:
- Feature interactions (e.g., dictionary lookups, AI explanation requests).
- Error and performance logs to improve service stability.
1.5 Local Storage
The extension uses Chrome's local extension storage (chrome.storage.local) to cache:
- Authentication tokens.
- User preferences and language settings.
- Temporary word data to reduce API calls.
This data is stored locally on your device and is not transmitted except as necessary to authenticate with our servers.
2. How We Use Your Information

|---|---|
| Account authentication and security | Email, profile info, auth tokens |

3. How We Store Your Data
- User account data, saved words, collections, and preferences are stored on our servers hosted on Amazon Web Services (AWS) in secure, access-controlled environments.
- Data is retained for as long as your account is active. You may request deletion at any time (see Section 6).
- Authentication tokens are stored locally in Chrome extension storage and expire automatically.
- We apply industry-standard security practices including encrypted connections (HTTPS/TLS) for all data in transit.
4. Data Sharing and Disclosure

4.3 Business Transfers
If LearnNewWord is acquired or merges with another entity, your data may be transferred as part of that transaction. We will notify you before any such transfer takes effect.
